This is not a quoll. It is a Western magpie – also known as a maggie. No relation to northern hemisphere magpies though – they’re related to butcherbirds and currawongs.

Magpies are very common where i live and have a very pretty warbling song. They’re also highly territorial and are known for swooping passers-by at certain times of year.

As i was leaving Perth Zoo, this magpie flew up onto a nearby sign and started posing like a pro. He totally earnt this photo.

The Noongar word for magpie is koolbardi.
