This is not a quoll but it’s close enough: it is a Tasmanian devil. Also a chuditch for good measure which definitely is a quoll.

All dasyurids are expert lie-downers. They often lie down on their front with their bodies flat against the ground although Charlie the chuditch also lies on his side sometimes too.

This is not a quoll but it is a dasyurid. It is a dibbler.

When he’s not lying around on branches, this dibbler is a very sociable fellow. Sometimes he gets so excited he accidentally falls off things and gets himself wedged into bits of his enclosure. Then one of the keepers has to free him.

Silly dibbler.

This is how you take a completely in-focus photograph of a chuditch in near darkness without a flash: cheat in Photoshop afterwards.

I composited a series of pictures with different focal points together to get the final image. For want of a better term i’m going to call it focus bracketing because there’s already exposure bracketing that gets you HDR images. This is the same principle applied to focus instead of dynamic range.

It’s a good thing he was lying still.

There are many ways to fall asleep on a branch and this dibbler is trying all of them.

Happy Boxing Day, incidentally. I thought a series of photos of an animal lying around suited the occasion well given that’s pretty much all people feel like doing the day after Christmas.

Hmph. Is it still Christmas?

Merry Christmas, i suppose. At least everything’s in focus for once.
