Blender Stuff I made

I started creating a hare character poly by poly in October 2010. It’s still a far cry from actually being any good and it’s missing bits of its head. This is the last project i can find from 2010.

Interestingly (or not that interestingly if you know me) i ended up working on another lagomorph character around two years later and this one i actually finished modelling. (That said, now that i’ve done a 3D modelling workshop, even this big guy’s topology doesn’t look right. So it goes.)

Projects last modified 25 October 2010 (then) and 18 September 2012 (now) respectively.

Blender Stuff I made

For a little while i went through an abstract phase. I just made shapes and lit the shapes and procedurally animated the shapes. I wanted things to move. I didn’t know what i was doing but i was happy to play.

This is a still image from an experiment lasting just a few seconds. It’s very simple geometry with a subsurface modifier, then the wave modifier forming the ripples, then the subsurface modifier again.

This was going to be a dinosaur. I thought, “Hey, dinosaurs are tubular, vaguely. I’ll start with a tube and extrude it and shape it and and and.”

No.

Little wonder i gave up on this dinosaur. There’s too many verts to deal with even at this very early stage of its creation. If i were redoing a dinosaur now, i’d start with way less geometry in the circumference. Probably i’d just start with a cube.

Editor’s note: Once upon a time, the photo blog and creativity blog were two different blogs on Tumblr. They got imported into the same WordPress blog and combined into one single thing. This post is where the creativity blog begins.

Welcome to Quollism vs Blender, where i try to become a generalist using the free open source software Blender. Blender can do many useful things and i’m going to try to become not terrible at all of them. As i’m typing this, i’m doing a course to get better at modelling.

Genuine competence at any 3D-related skill will likely take some years. Seems fair.

This is a render of the oldest Blender file i can find in my 3D directory. It is a cloud. Very likely i produced it by following a tutorial. I’ll try to keep straight tutorial posts to a minimum. They are boring.

I do need a first post though and it’s either this or a badly rendered pencil. I like clouds better than pencils.
