I caught Song of the Sea today as part of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival. Been waiting to see this one for ages and it was 100% worth the wait. It’s got a gorgeous storybook look which does some great tricks with perspective, the storytelling is strong without laying it on too thick… it’s just damn good. Beautiful and warm and funny and weepy (manly sniffles were heard at the screening) and awe-inspiring – and it saves the really awe-inspiring stuff for when it counts.

If you get a chance to see it, do. I’ll be snapping this up on BluRay when it finally hits Region B. Definitely a story I want to head back to, learn more about how they made it, etc.

When I saw it at the Aussie student showcase, I thought Catriona Drummond’s Pond Scum was a dead cert for the award. Alas, it was not to be, but I preferred this short tale of a cat-calling bogan biting off more than he could chew.

Kathryn Marshall’s Triveni was part of the Punto Y Raya abstract film showcase. The showcase started with a series of mostly sedate computer-rendered abstract pieces with clicky-pop electro-acoustic sound, all very reserved… and then suddenly we got hit with this explosion of colour and energy set to a rocking Spanish guitar tune by Gabriela Y

Rodrigo.

In the tradition of Len Lye and Norman McLaren, Triveni didn’t use a camera – the images were either painted directly onto a strip of 16mm film or scratched out of the leader.

More from MIAF 2015. Leonid Schmelkov’s Hopfrog was the second film of the Kids Program. I’ve yet to understand why this film filled me with intense childish glee the way it did. Unlike Lesley The Pony, nobody goes off the rails in this one though someone does get smacked in the face with a fish.

As promised, I’m posting some of my favourite shorts from MIAF. First out of the gates is Christian Larrave’s Lesley the Pony Has An A+ Day. This was part of the Late Night Bizarre show on Saturday evening.

Good luck getting the damn song out of your head after you watch it.
