There’s no better way of enjoying yourself than playing music, there really isn’t. And my thing never was just to be famous or just to have a big head, that was never what for me was the centre of what I wanted to do. What I wanted to do more than anything else is work within music and do my best to move it along and change it or add to it or evolve it or make some kind of textural difference to the whole thing, I guess that’s the passion of being an artist, you want to do something like that. And the temptation to kind of go commercial, having gone through that, I know what happens – you end up very empty inside, you really do, there’s nothing left of you. Because you … you really feel like you’ve sold out or something … in a way … when you start pleasing people. And frankly I think you please them much more, the ones who stay with you, if you just do what you really want to do. Cause I think they appreciate that you’re really playing from your heart what you feel is important.

Confession time

So I’m behind a few pages in the production art sketchbook and I’ve been playing around in Blender plenty. Not quite the plan I had.

There’s no real news on the pre-production front – I feel somewhat out of my depth with set design (I’m more of a character guy) so it’s pretty slow going. I’ve started rewatching the following movies for inspiration while searching for elements of a look:

  • Brazil
  • 2001 A Space Odyssey
  • Lilo & Stitch
  • Sleeper
  • Blade Runner (final cut)
  • Metropolis (2010 reconstruction)
  • THX 1138 (2004 director’s cut)
  • TRON (the original, not the fanfic sequel)
  • Tampopo

As prep for the production design stage, I’ve read through Freehand Drawing & Discovery (a great book about sketching) as well as Architecture: Form, Space and Order (also a great book about architectural principles).

Just have to keep working at it, really. Having the faith to spend enough time to allow hotter/cooler ideas to germinate and sprout from the lukewarm ones, not getting discouraged or intimidated or even despondent, that’s what it’s all about now. Everything is slow going the first time around.

COUCOU MOIGNON!

kaelooserie:

image

The French CG cartoon Kaeloo was probably the final push that made me want to properly try animation. For a supposed kids show It’s really really naughty.

Anyway. It turns out that one of the animators on Kaeloo season 2 is right here on Tumblr posting animated GIFs and answering questions about his job. Things like this are why i love the internet. 🙂

This GIF is of course Stumpy (Moignon in the French version) being pursued by Mr Cat (Monsieur Chat in the French version). As is often the case, Mr Cat is wielding a chainsaw… and yet chasing his co-stars with a chainsaw is far from the worst thing he’s done. Even cutting one of his co-stars apart with a chainsaw is far from the worst thing he’s done.
