These are not quolls. These are nankeen night herons living wild at Perth Zoo.

I walked out of the Nocturnal House during this visit and a striking young bird the likes of which I’ve never seen before is strutting about boldly. The adult form is much more sensible except for that long white thingy coming out of the back of their head. No idea what that’s all about. Radio antenna, maybe.

This is not a quoll. It is a singing honeyeater wild at Perth Zoo having some cracker biscuits for breakfast.

The abiding memory I have of singing honeyeaters as a child is when cats would catch and kill them. It’s been estimated that fifty percent of a cat’s kills are purely for their own entertainment – and that’s not counting offerings to their ape slaves.

This is not a quoll but it is from Australia. It is an Australian pelican.

Alas, I’ve already done that rhyming joke.

This is not a quoll. It is an Australasian darter. This one likes stealing scrunchies from girls. True story.

This is not a quoll. It is a jabiru. I really dig its iridescent head.
