There’s Pointy as an angel, and here’s a quick report from the world of 6 to 12 April 2015.

Well, first off: hooray for long weekends! After an unfortunate incident involving too much coffee on Sunday which all but wrote me off, I knocked over all the layout for Scene 6 on Monday and did another couple of quick shots for Scene 1 on Tuesday evening. This means that the beginning and the end of the movie are watchable as layout with no flashes of “Scene missing”. Yay for small victories!

On Friday I had a play with the procedural modelling plugin Sverchok and made some stuff. Not sure how useful it’ll be for this but getting the computer to do the tedious repetetive work is one of the reasons I like CG, therefore it has a certain appeal. 🙂

I also got some dialogue planning done on Friday which meant I could record scratch dialogue for scenes 2 to 4 on Saturday. This sets me up nicely for getting a big chunk of the layout done.

Today I’ve been modelling in preparation for Scene 3. Pointy has wings and a halo because of a one-shot gag. He will also have a harp.

Unfortunately the cold rainy weather kicked in this week and it’s making my back problems flare up something fierce. That on top of having to do some emergency cross-skilling at the dayjob on account of being short handed is sucking away my energy pretty horribly. Not fun, and certainly not ideal conditions for getting a movie done.

I’m still vaguely optimistic that I can get the rest of the layout done by the end of the month, especially since I’ve got another long weekend on the way for Anzac Day, but that’s partly assuming that I’ll get quicker at layout the longer I go for. We shall see!

Here’s a breakdown of the progress with layout so far:

  • Scene 1: Gronky gets breakfast – silent but all animation done
  • Scene 2: Pointy is revived by Gronky – scratch done, assets ready
  • Scene 3: Gronky goes back to help Pointy – scratch done, assets ready as of today
  • Scene 4: Gronky figures out how to help Pointy – scratch done, assets ready
  • Scene 5: Gronky figures out how to help Pointy without losing his mind – being revised, assets should be OK to go
  • Scene 6: Gronky gets Pointy to safety – animation done with dialogue
  • Scene 7: Pointy catches a bus – animation done with dialogue

For those interested in the great Blender LMB Select Experiment: I’m still using LMB select in Blender. Ctrl+RMB to extrude feels weird but I’m getting used to RMB scrub so that’s nice. I’m having to Ctrl+Space 8 the stupid manipulator out of the way a lot but that’s the biggest moan so far.

Onward!
