jackaburra:

Don’t mind me, I’m just making up for the sad lack of Easter Bilby posts on tumblr…. >_>

In Australia, rabbits are a serious introduced pest, causing severe damage to both the environment and our rare native species. Rabbits are such a pressing problem that is illegal to own them as pets in some states, and we have a whopping great fence (which spans the entire width of Australia), to try and stop them from spreading to more areas and doing more damage.

When Easter comes around, anyone who cares about protecting Australia’s rare plants, animals and landscape avoids anything that promotes rabbits in the slightest, because down here they shouldn’t be seen as anything other than Australia’s most devastating and widespread feral pest (do not get me started on how absolutely messed-up it was for them to make the Easter Bunny an Aussie in Rise of the Guardians…)

The little critter you see pictured above is the Easter Bilby. Bilbies are small nocturnal marsupials that live in self-made burrows (when feral rabbits haven’t stolen them, that is), and are one of the animals most at risk due to the Aussie rabbit menace. One species of bilby has already been pushed to extinction as a result of having to compete with rabbits for food and shelter, and the remaining species is sadly endangered.

More often than not, a percentage of the proceeds made from the sale of chocolate bilbies and other Easter Bilby merchandise goes towards the Save the Bilby Fund, an organisation focused on preserving one of Australia’s rarest and most threatened creatures. So I ask my Aussie followers, as I always do, to please support bilbies this Easter, not bunnies.

Bilbies. Because bunnies turned evil down here.
