Greetings, citizens of 24 to 30 April 2016. Have a roo.
Today is the exact two year anniversary of A Moment In The Sun. Two years ago, Gronky looked like a nectarine and Pointy looked like, well, Pointy. The story was a little jerk haranguing a large idiot for having a shadow that blocked out all the sun when he stood in it. And it’s the story – not the character design, art direction or anything else – which has been the main stumbling point ever since.
Last Sunday, I finally came hit upon an idea that neatly links everything together. It’s funny and it works narratively. It’s something I only really hit upon from two weeks of making pitchamatics and telling the story over and over again. It’s also nice and simple, not too much for the audience to hold in their heads.
In a nutshell, Gronky is constantly singing and making noises without realising it and Pointy finds this extremely irritating. It’s Pointy’s first line of dialogue. It’s a minor thing that grows into the driving conflict.
Also there’s a novelty plastic kangaroo. I modelled the roo this week.
Go and look at last week’s storyboards if you want to see what role it plays. 🙂
So the story’s now worked out, the storyboards are drawn, the low-quality assets are all made, and that means I’m ready to jump into 3D layout again. I’ve been through this process a few times over the course of production so I know what I’m in for – spreadsheets, mainly!
The rest of the week was spent nursing Yet Another Painful Torso Injury (intercostal muscle strain, if anyone’s keeping track) and visiting quolls at the city zoo.
Thanks for reading and have a good week! 🙂
