A moment in the sun Journals

Time to talk 24 to 30 July 2016.

The AMITS to-do list has grown and shrunk. I did more rigging and shot fixes
this week, including Gronky’s two props – the kangaroo and the
walkie talkie.

I’m rethinking a couple of the scenes too. Some parts of the movie just drag or the characters do something illogical. For instance, when Pointy leaves and starts to hear Gronky talking
through his hat, his current reaction is to get miffed but keep a lid on
it and try to outrun the radio signal’s range. Gronky sings at him,
it’s very cute, and Pointy gets away from the din. Yay! But Pointy’s not
doing anything super-funny – he’s just stomping along and carrying on and being annoyed.

The dramatic arc is that Pointy keeps a lid on his anger until he finally cracks.

So I’ve done up thumbnails of Pointy frantically attempting to destroy the speaker with one of the rocks that Gronky’s dug up and cast around. Gronky is still singing at him. But both characters are now doing something interesting.

The dramatic arc changes slightly – Pointy only mostly keeps a lid on his anger while trying to solve the problem with good old fashioned cartoon violence. The cracking point, when it does come, feels more like a progression and less like an explosion.

Irritation is OK, but visible tangible frustration is better.

I want to take that and a more concise ending sequence through the pipeline (board, pitch, animatic, rough 3D) at least to see how they work out. If they’re no good, at least I won’t be left wondering. 🙂

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next week!
