Here’s Ktish, the Quiet One of the project’s title, in colour. This is a guiding illustration for the image I want to make for BlenderGuru’s character contest. Ktish is having his first look at an alien planet he’s suddenly found himself on after stepping into a weird portal thingy – and he’s quite astonished by what he sees. Whatever that is.

As per custom among his people when meeting someone, he’s painted up in his ceremonial tribal totem designs. This is so that the people he’s meeting know their relation to him – his personal totem is a meteor shower, hence the vertical streaks and dots on his face and poncho, and the dots, eyes and pointy feather things represent a desert creature with scales and claws. It might be his tribal totem. I haven’t decided.

The thing around his neck is a datacard full of info about his world, his language and so on which will soon be put to good use as data for automatic translation. It was collected by a tablet-like device which was teaching and testing him for ten or more years up to this point, and it was that same device which opened the portal as something of a graduation present.

The picture is composed colour-wise to draw a visual and thematic contrast between the nature-centric world of nomadic living Ktish already knows and the highly advanced technology-centric world he’s about to step into. What the picture’s missing is set detail like panels and glowing lights and other high-tech props to sell that the world is incredibly high tech. Not sure what’ll be going in the left and right third of the image but I’ll probably keep it fairly calm and neutral. I don’t know about the glowing blue floor either but it’s doing its job contrasting against Ktish’s legs. The values feel about right but there’s always room for tweaking at the lighting/materials stage.

I’m pretty pleased to be able to look at this guy in colour after writing about and sketching him for five and a half months. 🙂 The sculpt is looking promising as well – with this image as reference, I reproportioned the sculpt today to make him more stocky and I think I’m nearly ready to kick off the long and challenging process of doing retopology. Better get to it!
